Walk into Saraveza once and you get a handshake from your beertender, Tyler “Tiger” “Elder” Vickers. Walk into Saraveza twice and there’s a chance that your beer will appear before you order it. That’s our Tyler. Tyler is known for his affinity for Pliny the Elder, polyester pants, Doo Wop, the Trail Blazers and his opinions. Earlier this year, Upright Brewing affectionately named their fresh hop beer, “Tyler the Elder.” This month, Tyler was awarded a much deserved accolade, “Oregon’s 2010 Bartender of the Year” as voted on by Northwest Brewing News readers.
Tyler, a native Portlander, was Saraveza’s first hire; on board before the walls were constructed. He came with a customer fan base from North PDX stints at Lompoc’s 5Q and Pix Patisserie. He’s the youngest oldest person you’ll ever meet and perhaps, under that beard, one of the kindest.
We at Saraveza are not only honored to have the 2010 Bartender of the Year in our presence, we have the 2009 recipient as well—Jonathan Carmean, beertender and manager. As Jonathan passes the torch to his colleague he remarks, “Everyone knows he deserves it. What people don’t know, however, is that Tyler believes it’s for the year 1964! So please don’t say anything. A pat on the back and a ‘Congratulations old man!’ should do just fine. Cheers, Tyler! You’re one of my best buddies and I’m better for it.”

Dec. Wed. 15th, 7pm: Where else can a home brewer share his beer with a metropolis? Beervana of course! Come on down for an evening that justifies why Portland is the best beer town in the world! Meet Noel Blake of the Oregon Brew Crew and Rob Widmer as they share two beers from “Collaborator”, the program that gives home brewers the chance to brew on a commercial system and distribute it through out the city. Saraveza welcomes the Oregon Brew Crew and all fellow home brewers as we take notice the influence the home brewing community has on our city. Without this culture, the level of quality, diversity and innovation would be severely stifled.
We’ll be pouring Sled Crasher ‘09, Bourbon Bbl Sled Crasher and Widmer’s Deadlift.

You may already recognize Jonathan from behind Saraveza’s bar or as Oregon’s 2009 Bartender of the Year from NW Brewing News. Not only is Jonathan a craft beer guru, he’s an amazing people person, making him a perfect fit for managing Saraveza.
Jonathan started his foray into the world of craft beer at Great Lakes Brewing in Cleveland, Ohio. In Fall 2005, he and his partner, Amber (of the Cascade Barrel House), were drawn to the Pacific NW particularly for its attitude towards life. Shortly after a quick stint at PDX’s Rock Bottom Brewery, local legend Jim Parker scooped up Jonathan to help open New Old Lompoc’s Oaks Bottom; thus beginning Jonathan’s career as a “serial opener” in Portland’s craft beer scene. Since, Jonathan was an original beer tender at the infamous Green Dragon and one of the first employees at Saraveza.
Jonathan and Amber love to spend time with the people they’ve met in Beervana. Through these relationships they are continually reminded why they moved here in the first place and believe that nothing exemplifies this in the same way that the craft beer industry in the Pacific NW does. We’re honored to have Jonathan on staff at Saraveza and know that with his eye for detail and considerate approach, he’ll successfully take care of the customers, staff and beer!
